How Short-termism and Technical Debt could kill good software teams

We have been in scenarios where the Dev teams take actions to expedite delivery – prioritising for speed over perfect code.

That is what is called “Tech Debt”

While this oft could happen – making this a practise is what kills good teams.

In the book, Superthinking, one of the mental models the authors talk about is looking at ‘short termism’ as a strategy.

“Short-termism can easily lead to the accumulation of technical debt and create disadvantageous path dependence….”

This extends to one of Joel’s 12 steps to better code – Do you fix bugs before writing new code?

The longer you wait, the harder it gets.

As leadership, are you ensuring your teams aren’t driven only by short term goals?

Here is Joel’s 12 steps to better code : https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2000/08/09/the-joel-test-12-steps-to-better-code/
